I recently came across an incredible find on Facebook Marketplace – a vintage Dixie campaign desk in need of some TLC. Along with this Dixie desk, I also picked up a Thomasville dresser and a mirror, all for only $100!
Assessing the Campaign Desk
After getting it home, I discovered this particular Dixie desk is part of their collectible Campaigner series. Campaign furniture is highly desirable, so I love finding gems like these to refresh. This compact desk will be perfect for my son’s room.
Upon initial inspection, the finish was worn in areas, and there was some damage, but overall it was in decent shape with all hardware still intact – making it a great candidate for refinishing. My goal is to strip and restain rather than change the color dramatically.

Refinishing Process & Steps
Stripping the Finish
I tried a couple different chemical strippers throughout the process with varying levels of success on this piece. Overall, the finish was thick lacquer that proved challenging to remove from the detailed areas. A carbide scraper helped speed up stripping on the top, but I still needed to hand sand in crevices.

I use a putty knife to remove the stripper and then lacquer thinner as an after wash

Sanding & Surface Prep
I worked through multiple grit sandpapers, starting around 80 and finishing with 180. My new sander attachment presented a bit of a learning curve to avoid deep groove marks in the surface.

Staining & Sealing
For the new finish, I chose General Finishes Gel Stain in Antique Walnut to mimic the original look. I sealed with Osmo Hard Wax-Oil, applying 2 coats, with an extra coat on the desktop area.

Hardware & Drawer Refresh
The original hardware was tarnished, so I polished and gilded it to restore its shine and luster. To refresh the drawer interiors, I treated them with Danish Oil.

The Reveal: Renewed Dixie Campaign Desk
While this restoration didn’t involve major overhauls, fixing the failing finish and issues brings new life to a gorgeous vintage Dixie collectible. The newly stained solid wood and updated hardware pairing nicely with the clean midcentury style. It will be the perfect addition to my son’s room and hopefully something he can keep for many more years.
